About Us

Chesapeake Bay Psychological Services

Established in 2006 by Dr. Catherine Smithmyer on Maryland’s Kent Island, CBPS is a multidisciplinary outpatient mental health practice currently composed of psychologists, licensed professional counselors, and licensed clinical social workers.

Our Mission:

Our mission is to provide excellent, culturally responsive mental healthcare services to our community, while aiming to make those services affordable by accepting Medicare and most insurance.

Our Statement on Social Justice:

At Chesapeake Bay Psychological Services, we believe that every human being should be treated with equity and dignity. Moreover, as healers, we know that unjust treatment can contribute to many of the very same mental health problems that we work to heal. Therefore–although none of us are perfect–we strive to treat all persons, including everyone we serve, equitably and with respect. We are aware that many in our community and in our nation have unjustly faced disrespect, discrimination, mistreatment, or oppression due to the assumptions, attitudes, fears, resentments, ignorance, bias, misunderstanding, stereotypes, or misconceptions of others. We stand against all such injustice. In our work, we aim to be part of the solution.

Our Invitation to You:

Invitation to Potential Clients: You are welcome to seek services at Chesapeake Bay Psychological Services, where our goal is to provide excellent service regardless of your perceived mental health challenges, “race” or ethnicity, citizenship/immigration status, socioeconomic status, occupation, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, or religious affiliation or non-affiliation. If you ever feel that you have been treated unfairly or made uncomfortable by any of our staff, please let us know, and we will do our best to make amends. If you have suggestions regarding how we might improve our customer service or how we might make our clients more comfortable, again, please let us know–simply call us or use the form at the bottom of this page. There is always room for improvement.

Likewise, if you are bothered by–or questioning–your own attitudes, feelings, or reactions to certain groups of people, you are welcome to seek services at CBPS and to discuss those concerns with one of our therapists. No one can blame you for having learned whatever the world has taught you. However, you can take responsibility for your choices, including making the choice to learn more–to learn what you may have missed. Truly, we are all learning together.

Invitation to Potential Staff: Chesapeake Bay Psychological Services is an equal opportunity employer. Moreover, we recognize that we would benefit from greater staff diversity than we now have. Even when we are not actively hiring, psychotherapists, other jobseekers, and potential internship students are welcome to contact us to ask if we might be able to create an opportunity for you at CBPS.
